Y2013 S1: Pre-School Engagement Programme #5 Blogging (II)

Being a frequent user of blogs, it is important for us to know how to manage the activities in the blog through the various features available.

We are going to explore and configure some of the settings in our blog.

In the left panel, click at "Settings" followed by "Language and Formatting".
At "Time Zone", select (GMT +8:00) Singapore

(B) Comment Notification Email

In the left panel, click at "Settings" followed by "Mobile and Email".

(C.2) You may add or remove gadgets to your blog. You may also move the gadgets around.

Add the following gadgets to your blog:

(D) Getting to know the Toolbar

Most of the time, we edit the post at the "Compose" mode where we can do the formatting easily (WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get)

Occasionally, we have to switch over to the "HTML" mode in order to embed some html codes into the post. This is in particular useful when we want to embed media into the post.

Some examples:
  • Video clips from YouTube
  • GoogleMap
  • Online Sticker Board
  • Mindmap
  • Digital Posters
  • Online Forms
  • Online Presentations

(D.1) Embedding a GoogleMap in a blog post

In #3 GoogleMap, we created a map and named it "Places I like to go in Singapore".

We are going to post this map in a new blog post and elaborate on some of the places that were highlighted in the map.

1. Create a new post entitled "Places I like to go in Singapore".

2. Retrieve the map (from GoogleMap)

3. Click at the "hyperlink" icon to display:

4. Copy the code in the 2nd box (subheading: Paste HTML to embed in website).

5. Return to the blog post, switch to the "HTML" mode and paste the code in the space.
It should look like this:

6. Switch back to "Compose" mode and the post should look like this:

7.  In the same post, describe some of the places that you like to go, and why you like to go to those places.

(D.2) Embedding a Video Clip (from YouTube) into the blog

Similarly, we can embed video clips into the blog so that we can watch it together with the accompanied text.

1. Create a new post entitled "A video clip that caught my attention".

2. Identify one video clip in "Youtube EDU" (http://www.youtube.com/education?category=K-12) that you find interesting and would like to introduce it to your audience.

3. Underneath the video clip, click at "Share" followed by the "Embed" button.

4. The HTML code will be displayed. Copy the HTML code.

5. Return to the blog post, switch to the "HTML" mode and paste the code in the space.
It should look like this:

6. Switch back to "Compose" mode and the post should look like this:

7.  In the same post, add the following:

  • Title of the video clip
  • Briefly what is the content of the video clip
  • In 3 bullet points, describe briefly what you have learnt from this video clip?
